Key to authentic forgiveness

Tuesday of the 3rd week of Lent

Matthew 18:21-35

The prayer of Azariah is so intense in asking the Lord for forgiveness.

In our case, it becomes a lot easier for us to be forgiven because it is Jesus who has forgiven us.  What makes it hard for us to forgiven then?  What's in our hearts that we want to retaliate?  Do we honestly think that by vengeance, we would get the satisfaction of our souls?

Why don't we forgive?  We want to get even.  We want to play god.  But is that the game of God?  His option is to forgive.  The aim of the parable is to show us that we need to forgive because we cannot buy even our salvation.  With the gravity of our sin, we deserve just punishment.

But the option of Jesus is to forgive.  Forgiveness is the key theme of Lent.

How do we forgive then?  Forgive just like Jesus.  His forgiveness is the fruit of mercy and compassion.  His forgiveness offers new life for the sinner.  "Forgive and you shall be forgiven," says the Lord.
